My experience at Carlsbad Medical Center was mixed. I went in for lab work with a doctor’s order, and while the nurses and medical staff I encountered appeared professional and caring, my experience at the front desk was disappointing. The employee who checked me in came across as moody and unfriendly, which made an already stressful visit feel even more overwhelming. Since this is the only hospital serving our community, patients don’t have many options, so it’s especially important that everyone is treated with kindness, patience, and respect from the moment they walk through the door. Another concern was hearing staff discuss what appeared to be staffing shortages. I was told that there was only one person available to perform certain imaging services, that the same employee was covering multiple areas of the hospital, and that wait times could be several hours. I was even encouraged to consider going to another clinic because of these delays. I understand that healthcare workers often have demanding jobs, and I appreciate the nurses and providers who continue to care for patients despite those challenges. However, staffing levels and operational issues are management’s responsibility, not something patients should have to worry about while seeking medical care. Hearing about internal staffing problems during my visit did not inspire confidence and added unnecessary stress. I sincerely hope hospital leadership takes these concerns seriously. Improving the attitude and professionalism of front desk staff, as well as ensuring adequate staffing and support for employees, would greatly improve the experience for patients. The medical staff deserve the resources they need, and patients deserve compassionate service and timely care when they come to the hospital for help.
